Flea Markets and Swap Meets
Flea Markets and Swap Meets are pretty much interchangable terms anymore. Some Swap Meets, such as autoparts and computers are dedicated to exchanges within an area of product. When people attend a Flea Market, they are looking for bargains, collectibles, specialty items, and more. To some it's a hobby, to others it's a way of life. Keep in mind that although people are looking for bargains, money really isn't a serious issue. If your merchandise is priced fairly, it will sell. Buyers include other dealers seeking a low price which they can increase for a profit. If I'm set up in the same Flea Market as the other dealer, I might as well be the one selling to the end buyer. More profit for me. |
A rule of thumb, if you've carried an item for very long, either your price is too high, or your item has a very limited group of people seeking it. I usually discount such items substantially, even below what I paid, just to get my money out to cycle into something else. Some people will not negotiate on their prices. It isn't required but I find marking items about 20% over what I want allows room for wheeling and dealing as well as trading.
Don't expect any deals or discounts if you run down a dealers' merchandise. Some dealers do this in an effort to get a lower price. I won't do business with people like that. In fact, I won't sell to someone that tries this at my listed price.
